Affordable Days Out in and around Tameside

In Tameside there are lots of exciting places to visit around Tameside, Canals, Woods, Parks, Cafes. Some of our staff favourites are


Portland Basin- M35 9WJ

Portland Basin is set in a19th Century Ashton Canal Warehouse and is part of the peak Forest canal which stretches from Ashton for 12 miles. The canal has picnic benches at different points and is accessible to wheelchairs and cyclists.

Things to do along the canal-

· Cycle

· Walk

· Look at the different barges

· Have a picnic

· Fishing

· Spot wildlife

· Feed the ducks

· Play on the large grassy areas, jump, run, hop etc

· Hire a canal boat

Portland basin museum has a café or picnic benches, to visit the museum you may need to book due to COVID. The museum is family friendly and would interest families from 2years to adult, there is lots of visual displays and interactive activities for children to take part in, there is a play area for under-fives, there is also a shop, baby changing area and toilet facilities.


Daisy Nook County Park- M34 9WJ

This is a country park on the boarder of Ashton/Oldham. It is suitable for all ages and is a great way to explore the countryside on our doorstep. There is a small free car park which at times can get busy at peak times. The Park offers lots of different pathways to explore, there is a pond to paddle in or pond dipping. If you get hungry there is a café that offers breakfast, lunch, and ice-creams. There is a stable close by that offers horse riding lessons or watch the horses run in the field. There is also a garden centre close by which opens daily.
